Canvassed Construction — The Detail That Defines Quality

This is the detail that most people don't know about — and it is arguably the single most important difference between a premium garment and a retail one.

Every jacket has a chest piece — an internal layer that gives the front of the jacket its structure and shape. In most retail suits, this chest piece is glued to the outer fabric using a process called fusing. It is fast, cheap and produces a jacket that initially looks clean and pressed. The problem is that with dry cleaning, heat and wear, fused garments begin to delaminate — the glue breaks down, the fabric bubbles and the jacket loses its shape permanently. Most men have seen this happen to a suit they owned. That is fusing.

At Akkari Menswear, every suit is constructed with either half-canvas or full-canvas construction. The canvas is a layer of natural fibres — typically wool and horsehair — that is hand-stitched to float between the outer fabric and the lining. It is never glued. Over time, this floating canvas moulds to the contours of your chest, draping and moving with your body rather than against it. A canvassed suit improves with age. It becomes more yours with every wear.

Full canvas extends through the entire front panel of the jacket. Half canvas covers the chest and lapel area. Both are vastly superior to fusing — and neither is found in retail suits at any price point.

The Measuring Process — Far Beyond a Tape Measure

The word 'measurements' makes most people think of a tape measure around the chest, the waist and the trouser inseam. That is where a retail alteration begins and ends. At Akkari Menswear, it is where the process starts.

Shoulder Assessment

We assess your natural shoulder width and your shoulder type. A soft shoulder — minimal or no padding — follows the natural line of your shoulder for a relaxed, Italian-influenced silhouette. A structured shoulder adds a degree of padding for a more formal, classic English line. Neither is better than the other — the right choice depends on your body, your style and the purpose of the garment.

Armhole Height

The armhole is one of the most critical and most commonly neglected — elements of jacket construction. A high, clean armhole allows the sleeve to move freely with your arm without pulling the jacket body upward. Retail suits cut low armholes because they are easier to fit across a range of bodies. A properly cut high armhole is only possible when the jacket is made for one specific person — you.

Posture Analysis

We assess both your erect posture and your natural, relaxed posture. These are rarely identical. Most people carry a slight forward lean, a shoulder drop or a curvature in the spine that, if not accounted for in the pattern, will cause the jacket to pull, ride up or gap at the collar. We tailor to how you actually stand and move — not an idealised upright position that you don't naturally hold.

Collar Height and Neck Posture

The back collar of a jacket should sit cleanly against your shirt collar at all times — not gaping away from the neck or riding up above it. Achieving this requires precise assessment of your neck angle and posture. It is one of the details that immediately distinguishes a well-made garment from a poorly fitting one.

Sleeve Pitch and Length

Your arms hang at a natural angle from your shoulders. If the sleeve is not set at the correct pitch for that angle, the jacket will pull or twist at the shoulder every time you move. Sleeve pitch is set individually for each client and is impossible to correct in a pre-made garment.

Bespoke vs Made-to-Measure — Understanding the Difference

At Akkari Menswear we offer both bespoke and made-to-measure tailoring. Both are made entirely from scratch — a fresh pattern is drafted for every client, for every garment, every time.

The distinction between the two lies in the fitting process:

–      Made-to-measure — your pattern is drafted from your measurements at the initial consultation, the garment is constructed in full and you return for a final fitting where any adjustments are made. Construction typically takes 3–5 weeks depending on fabric and complexity.

–      Bespoke — involves multiple fittings during the construction process itself. You will typically try the jacket at the basted (half-finished) stage, allowing the tailor to assess the fit on your body before the garment is completed. Further fittings follow at subsequent stages of construction. This process is more time-intensive and commands a higher investment, but the level of precision it achieves is unmatched.
